I think Pakistan is needed not only because they trained Taliban, but because Iran and Pakistan are the only neighbors Afghanistan has. An air strike to Afghanistan is impossible without violating either Pakistani or Irani air space...

And I don't hold my breath for Iran granting us Air passage...

Surface to air missiles can be fired from the sea...but it is absolutely essential to negotiate air space from one of these two countries. It may never be used...but if Afghanistan is to believe in seriousness of a possible air strike, an air corridor has to be negotiated asap and air force has to be positioned !

The General is hoping that all of Pakistan's problems will be solved, debt, the jehadis, and Kashmir - in the meanwhile he has a little problem of surviving for the next few months.

Well said.
