Sometimes a shift in thinking must be precipitated by some monumentuous event. In the business world, there has previously been a great emphasis on 'face to face' meetings. I'm sure everyone's seen it; people flying in for meetings that really could have happened on the phone or using video conferencing. But, there was an unspoken code that meetings had to happen 'face to face' to underscore the participants commitment to the vendor, customer, etc. Now, there is both a very human and very business reason to take advantage of the current technology. Once people get used to the idea of conducting business (meetings, etc) using this technology, they will be reluctant to go back to the 'old wasteful ways'. Companies will find that their employees productivity increases while costs decrease, and it will find acceptance in industry. There will still be times when face-to-face is the only way, but you won't get the person take 1-2 travel days for a 1-2 hour meeting. This, along with a greater recognition for the need for distributed computing, will drive future growth in this sector. Will SUNW benefit? They may, if they can position themselves between MSFT and IBM as a viable, open price point in the middle. As far as the market, we're seeing the next phase: disbelieve, horror, sadness, anger, and now, fear. Fear is driving this market, but reason will return. Some people rationalize this fear into projecting a 5+ year global recession; I don't know what reasonable basis they have for this, other than their emotion at the moment. Rates are low, inflation is low, oil prices are down; all elements are there for a return to growth. Once the political situation stabilizes and we hunt down the scum, the pychology will shift and people will be much more hopeful. I take the fear expressed on this and other threads as another indication that we are in the process of forming the bottom. Picked up some Jan 03 $20 calls today, along with other companies that I believe will weather this storm (CSCO, SEBL, GLW, NT, JDSU, JNPR, ...). The next couple of weeks will form the shape of the bottom, IMHO. Good luck to us all.
