He was good enough to work for the US wasn't he?

Do you believe that he 'worked' for the US?

Or do you believe that he 'worked' for his own objectives and 'accepted' the means to further his own goals at the time, from his now avowed enemy.

Its my sense that everything this man has done has been part of a *very* long range plan.

- accept any help to push the Soviets out of Afghanistan
- resulting in elevation of his stature within the Islamic and especially militant Islamic community
- provides him a base of operations and a nation state = real Power esp. in his community
- with a long term goal of destabilizing relations between the western and non Islamic world vs the Islamic world
- and an ultimate goal of some very large and powerful Islamic state that is more than what exists today, a collection of independent states loosely aligned by oil, culture, and religion. He wants a mega-state.

Maybe he gets to retire by a river and be a quiet cleric then. Who knows.

But he was denied the chance to increase his stature/power by Kuwait during the invasion, and Iraq would have been a very tempting morsel for him - win acclaim and also push the very un-Islamic Saddam out. Double feature, but the 'evil' USA stole the show. That must have hurt him big time, and set him back.

It seems to me that Bin Laden, or a larger conspiracy or coalition of like minded people, want nothing more than to destabilize the entire region and seize the region in every sense of the word.

By drawing in the USA he can use them to escalate the tensions through hatred. Kuwait - a willing bride to the US at the time. But now? Pakistan co-opted (for good reasons in my mind) and an attack on a country more representative of Islam than Iraq was?

He/they need only find a way to truly ignite Israel/Palestine and suddenly we have more hate than can probably be contained.

Bin Laden is no innocent. He has a plan. The suffering of his or other peoples is no consequence to him.

I don't view this as a war between Islam and other religions. But I think Bin Laden would happily characterize the situation as that, simply because it is part of his plan, and one of his principle tools - hate.

Hitler would be proud.

But we know what happened to him in the end.
