I am currently on a Dell 8000 850 MHz with 512 Ram and love it! Just remember it is a true replacement for a desk top and carries the weight that goes with it! I use two batteries in it most of the time and get about 5 and half hours of power. A friend of mind just bought the Dell 8000 1 GHz with 512 Ram and loves it as well. If you are wanting something to carry all the time, you probably want a lighter weight machine. Both of us got the Ultra Screen instead of the Super so I can't tell you how much difference their is between them. If you are getting 256 RAM, I would recommend getting it on 1-Dimm. This leaves the other slot open for future use. This is the same recommendation I gave my friend who within 2 months had order the second 256 1-Dimm for his machine.

BTW, I requested the 3Com internal modem and Ethernet mini-PCI card. It seems to get me connected at higher speeds than I was getting on my various desk tops. You can also add a modular RW-CD Drive in the future allowing direct CD coping.

I have no experience with the Compaq.

Peter, you may want to look at Sager. I think it is a good value.

sagernotebook.com

I have owned a 15" 8560 for about 2-1/2 years with never a minutes problem. It is carried and used as a desk top on a daily basis - 8-9 hours. I believe Sager has a fairly good warranty if I remember correctly - never had to use it.

A warning - it is a boat anchor, somewhere around 9-10 lbs. It is well constructed and rugged. I once dropped mine out of the case thinking it was closed, and it fell to a tile floor with no negative consequences. Another thing - although it has a large keypad, I find that sometimes I inadvertently hit the caplocks key. However, that may be because I am a klutz of a typist and typical of laptop keyboards.

Hope you find this useful.

Regards,
