Well, the stakes can get pretty high in modern warfare. (cynical on) Not to worry, there's plenty more people to kill, money to evaporate, and jobs to disappear (cynical off).

I think it's important to note that we are defending the 21st century against the 12th. Whether or not people are on our side, I think it's safe to say that a majority of them around the world would rather not enter the state of superstitious squalor and cultural stagnation that seems to pervade the places where these relics of a bygone age have influence. In particular, I doubt you will find many North Americans, Europeans, Russians, or Chinese that think we should just let this one go. Viewed in this light I would propose that there is no cost to either side that can be too high.

It is likely to be a long struggle, perhaps spanning generations as the struggle with Russian communism did, and will have a greater influence on human history than any preceding it. I wouldn't be counting losses to find an endpoint just yet, the game has been on for some time and has now moved to a much rougher level of play.
