Re <<We need to kill as many of those people as possible so that they will never attack us again. I was in shock. These seemingly very nice people with two small children were talking genocide, extermination.>>

Unfortunately that is not an uncommon thought. But we can rise above that and I think we will.

When I wrote that post, I had just experienced the conversation with my friends. I was very surprised/shocked by their attitude. We had known each other for a couple of years and never had had this kind of conversation. Something else subtle occurred during that conversation that I did not mention in my post....underlining their words was the implicit message: if you are not with us, then you are against it. That's what was most disturbing to me. I understand that a terrible attack has been made on this country with a substantive loss of life. Last Tuesday, like everyone else, I was stricken by that attack. However, if that means a total loss of reason and that disagreement will not be tolerated, then I am worried about the consequences.

Bin Laden and his supporters must be eliminated. But it is very important to realize that for every innocent person that dies, Taliban army will increase by 5.

I understand that all too well. And on the other hand, if done right, we will have an opportunity to rebuild relations with many Islam countries that have been strained for the past several decades. That has to be our ultimate goal if we all are to survive on this planet.
