Telecommunications Companies
Might Enjoy Boost in Business

By ALMAR LATOUR and KEVIN DELANEY
Staff Reporters of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

The terrorist attack in the U.S., while boosting fears of a recession, could indirectly benefit the telecoms industry in several ways.

If business airline traffic suffers a lengthy slowdown, companies are likely to turn to electronic means of communications such as videoconferencing and teleconferencing, and there are already clear signs of such an increase. This in turn, say analysts, could hasten the rollout of broadband connections for both homes and offices. In addition, this week's surprise reduction in interest rates will relieve the debt-repayment burden of indebted European telecoms operators.
