QwikSand,re:"enemies on our shores". This country has no
border, and hence defenseless for this type of operation (or
struggle to just barely keep up with it).

Thanks for your comments. No one wants a police state of course. I think I'm just less willing to lose some of my freedoms than perhaps others are, but its a complicated judgement call that will probably evolve over time.

I do actually think this was somewhat similar to the situation of the KKK blowing up bombs and killing people in the south in the 60s who were trying to help civil rights for black people. Those KKK guys weren't from other countries, who were lying low in the US till their terrorist action. But it was similar in the sense that there were huge groups of people who were consistently agitating and communicating towards their goal (much more openly than these terrorists!), and I guess while we had some success against them in the law enforcement community, it was mostly after the fact convictions, and not stopping people ahead of time.

Maybe its harder to stop when you have lots of people making terroristic threats, but we still had a large "national security apparatus" including the FBI, and we seemed to be relatively powerless in preventing things. Perhaps this is partly due to the fact that a fair number of people working in law enforcement were not very sympathetic to the plight of the blacks.
