Yeah, that is the part I dislike the most. Strauss argued that most authors, until the late modern period, had to be careful of offending established opinion, and therefore hid their most profound opinions in their work, by using codes that would alter the interpretation of the exoteric version. While it is not altogether implausible, it never gave a convincing account of how the cogniscenti are supposed to get at the esoteric version, or be sure of their speculations in that regard. Of course, one of the disputes between Straussians is those who think Strauss was more or less straightforward, and those who think there is an elaborate esoteric version. Anyway, counting pages or the number of times a word is used is not numerology, but an attempt to crack the code, and discover hidden intent within the text.......
