MARKET TALK: Shorts May Leave Before Bush Speech

Edited by Thomas Granahan

MARKET TALK can be found using code N/DJMT

2:19 (Dow Jones) Word is Goldman continues to be a buyer in S&P futures. "I
don't think too many of the current shorts in the market want to be short
going into the President's talk this evening," trader remarks. Move above
1004.00 could propel buying up to 1011.00, he says. (CMN)
2:12 (Dow Jones) It's one thing to get the market up and running. It's quite
another to resume large equity sales. But, earlier than some analysts
expected, Merrill Lynch (MER) has done it, bringing the first equity-capital
markets deal since the attacks. Merrill sold 3 million shares of Allied
Capital (ALD) at $22.50, a deal taken down from a shelf registration,
according to Dealogic CommScan. Deals for Annaly Mortgage (NLY), through
Warburg, and Fred's Inc. (FRED), through William Blair, are expected after
the close. (RJH)
2:00 (Dow Jones) Question of "where and when and of what manner" terrorists
could respond to a U.S. strike is "another variable that contributes to the
whole uncertainly plaguing investor mindset," today, says Patrick O'Hare, a
market analyst with Briefing.com. "These people clearly have their own
agenda and won't be deterred by a U.S. response," he says. (CMN)
