The root cause, in a general sense, is a desire to numb oneself of feeling -- that is, pain avoidance. In another general sense, it has to do with a lack of adequate coping skill for that individual in that life situation. There are many, many reasons that one would strives to do that, and you are right on the money that a healthy growing goes a long way to healthy adulthood. For much more about addictions and the cons used to excuse and propagate them, I'd suggest reading When Society Becomes an Addict, by Ann Wilson Shaef to get some background.
