Ike, There are deeds which reason can weigh, but the heart cannot grasp. The act of self destruction, even in war, can only be done knowing suicide is worth something. That is the dotted line so difficult to step over.

It is troubling that all of the terrorists lived as free men in preparation for mass murder. They daily saw children, families, had helpful people around them teaching them, praying with them. They shopped for food, ate with others, they no doubt laughed with others. They traveled in Europe, they saw old and young, they saw people beginning their lives and those growing old. In the end they took off their masks of humanity and became mass murderers.

The confusion of ignorance, of illiteracy, of being supressed and displaced certainly can mold a stone of anger in any person. But how can mass murder be equated as a justifiable cause? The Taliban and fundamentalists used dynamite to destroy the legacy of Buddha.. they were saying to the world time begins with what they do, there is no history they respect, it was a clear signal to the world that they intend every icon to be destroyed.

One hears revenge, God, destiny, a righteous path, infidels, reclaiming dignity, blind anger.. anger with eyes wide open. These are all incomplete and fail. This isn't seeking God, this isn't wisdom, this isn't life.. its madness, a black heart from which nothing escapes.. even the black heart itself.

The anger that traveled to the World Trade Center returns to Afghanistan, to Pakistan, to Iran, to Russia, India, Egypt, the Sudan.. to England, France, Germany, Italy and a hundred other countries.

I applaud Pakistan's President for taking a stand. He understands that only chaos will rule if terrorism isn't stopped. Or perhaps he's acting without choice, the fundamentalists would not allow him power if they were to take over. Whatever the reason, he will need courage and leadership and I wish him and your country all of that and so much more. My best to you and yours.
