Decided to check in on the aftermath of the president's fine speech, so I may as well take a crack at the question you raise. Although we get impressions of our fellow man from our acquaintances, including family, we also do so through culture. We supplement experience with literature and films, for example. We read history or philosophy, speculate about society or ethics, and in various ways form ideas which impinge upon our direct impression of our fellow man. It is inevitable that we do so, because experience is too limited, and cannot reveal all we need to know. To the extent that our ideas are wrong, they distort. To the extent that they are correct, they do not. In some instances, the matter may be irresolvable, and thus our view of man may have elements of choice in it.......
