North American Semiconductor Equipment Industry Posts August 2001 Book-to-Bill Ratio of 0.61 SAN JOSE, Calif., September 20, 2001 -- The North American-based manufacturers of semiconductor equipment posted $742 million in orders in August 2001 and a book-to-bill ratio of 0.61, according to the August 2001 Express Report published today by Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International (SEMI). A book-to-bill of 0.61 means that $61 worth of new orders were received for every $100 of product shipped for the month. The three-month average of worldwide bookings in August 2001 was $742 million. The bookings figure is three percent below the revised July 2001 level of $761 million and 75 percent below the $2.98 billion in orders posted in August 2000. The three-month average of worldwide shipments in August 2001 was $1.2 billion. The shipments figure is even with the revised July 2001 level of $1.2 billion and is 50 percent below the August 2000 shipments level of $2.4 billion. "The numbers indicate that the leveling in the decline of orders and shipments seen in the past several months continued through August," said Stanley T. Myers, president and CEO of SEMI. "The effects of recent current events and wavering consumer confidence and spending, however, could further exacerbate the already tenuous situation in regards to chip demand and capacity." The SEMI book-to-bill is a ratio of three-month moving average bookings to three-month moving average shipments for the North American semiconductor equipment industry.
