Those countries have miserably and utterly failed to industrialize. The average wage in Egypt today is the same as it was in 1950.

This collision has been building in a major way since the Afghan-Russian war. We can speculate on how it could have been avoided, with better diplomacy etc. but it's too late now. IMO policies could have maintained to allow that to simmer until they somehow began to prosper, like our policies with China. Maybe we can have that discussion as this winds down, whenever that is.

You make a great point -

Germany was "allowed" to "get away with it" until it was too late and then we were forced into an ugly war. We could have "cut Hitler off" early on with just the right amount of diplomacy and saber-rattling (they had no real military power to fight back in 1934-5).

I think we're guilty of the same thing and unfortunately we're going to have an ugly war. I still don't see why I should be happy about this or stand up and cheer about it.

Still the parallel between these terrorists and Germany's 3rd Reich is a thin one. Here, the enemy isn't so well defined to strike. We're going to have a tougher time "winning this war".
