I have no problem with a bullet instead of a trial, and the last thing I would want is to support these assholes in a jail for the rest of their lives. I previously indicated that I still grieve for the lack of justice for the marines in Beruit, the soldiers in Somalia, the waste of life in our embassies, the sailors on the Cole, and all that have gone before them in fruitless endeavors viewed by politicians without concern for the lives that put at risk. My dad joined the navy at age 14, having forged his sister's birth certificate and rose to the rank of Commander before a bad heart forced him to retire. During a critical period of my life he was gone 23 1/2 months out of 24 ferrying supplies into Nam as the captain of an LST. You can imagine his dismay when he found out that I was up to my gills in the anti-war movement. I told him that as long as they allowed the ships to go into the North Vietnam harbors and unload the the Soviet supplies, and require our planes to fly into a passage covered by SAM's, and ... I had no interest in supporting the effort. OTOH if our president indicated that this was important to the security of our country and we there to win, I would be the first in line. I informed him that I was not a pacifist, but had no intention of simply sacrificing my life for someone's political cause. There was no further debate. That said, I've got a "towel head" as a personal friend. He is deeply distraught about this act of terrorism. He is also deeply concerned about the messages left on his telephone answering machine threatening the life of his family. There are real reasons why some celebrate our sadness. I do not agree with any of them. However, we can not label a group or a religion based on the actions of a few. There are powers that want a New World Order and to promote or condone such labeling just plays to their cause. To sacrifice our Freedoms in the name of security just plays to their cause. I can close my eyes and see the path this leads to, and it makes me cry for the world of my grandchildren yet to be born. Lastly, you more than most, know that this could have and should have been prevented. The greed of corporations and the lack of will of our government, caused it to be otherwise. This is the real tragedy. All that said, I was deeply moved by President Bush's speech. This morning we awoke with a president; tonight we go to bed with a statesman. I really think we witnessed a man rising to the level of the position. I hope I am right. I hope this effort helps to further explain my disagreement.
