Nokia looks to enter China's CDMA handset market

Mobile phone giant Nokia is looking to enter the CDMA (code-division multiple access) handset market in China through partnership with Chinese phone producer PTIC CAPITEL Group, according to a top CAPITEL official.

At a CAPITEL news conference held on September 6, company president Yang Liansi said: "Nokia has sent us a written invitation to produce CDMA handsets together. As Nokia has no licence to produce CDMA handsets in China, this cooperation will help them access our huge market."

PTIC CAPITEL Group is a subsidiary of China PTIC Information Industry Corp, the largest communications company in China. Last month CAPITEL and 18 other domestic handset producers were granted licences to produce CDMA mobile phones by the Ministry of Information Industry. Motorola was the only foreign company to win a licence.

Yang said CAPITEL's board of directors will rename Nokia (Beijing) Co Ltd, a 50-50 venture between CAPITEL and Nokia launched in 1995, CAPITEL Nokia (Beijing) Co Ltd. This year the two companies invested 10 billion yuan (US$1.2 billion) to set up an industrial zone for handset research and development.

"The cooperation with Nokia on CDMA handsets is still in the preparatory stages. We hope to co-develop phone platform and design with Nokia, while using our own printed circuit board," Yang said. "Nokia looks forward to releasing CDMA handsets with CAPITEL in November."

China Unicom is expected to launch CDMA services in China in October.

Xu Shujie, vice manager of Nokia's handset department, declined to reveal details about Nokia's plan to produce CDMA phones in China.
