Hi TA,

I believe the multiplier associated with consumer spending is greater than that associated with government spending. So generally my preference always goes to the freer market ( consumer spending).

The real negative is if this "war against terror" becomes an opportunity for "pork barrel spending". If that is perceived then the cost of debt will rise and that is what America cannot afford ( since we are the world's largest debtor ).

However if the world perceives our deficit spending as a small price to eliminate the costs of terrorism(which now have escalated to much more than psychological costs), then this government spending will be a plus to the economy whether it be wartime or peacetime. One of the true responsibilities of Government and their justifications for taxation is : Defense.

It is conceivable that in our global world -global defense is a reasonable evolution as our world continues to shrink.

JMHO
