The Counter party to short sellers were ultimately consumers of the metal, mainly the jewelry trade followed by investors(although one could argue that a large portion of the jewelry trade is used as a store of wealth in many countries) and industrial users. Most of that gold is still around and ready to be melted down for the right price and circumstances.

I'm pretty sure you knew this Claude, what point are you about to make?
