The Osama bin Laden's of the world may not be people who can be reasoned with. If that is the case then a hard response is required. But first and foremost we should know. We should take the time, do the investigations, make the political contacts and know before we start killing.

Round about 7,000 innocent, non-combatant citizens publicly executed in barbaric, inhuman fashion in full view of millions of Americans and others the world over and "we need to know"????? In my opinion anyone at all issuing fatwas calling for the immediate murder of all Americans and other westerners deserves exactly the same treatment they wish to mete out to us. We are not out to attack moderates or peace-loving peoples. However, when it comes to mass murderers and their patrons, I find it incredible that anyone would suggest we need to have understanding or "accept responsibility" for what they have done. Certainly the rise of Hitler was in no small part made possible by the Allies exacting wildly punitive and destructive reparations payments from Germany after WWI, but that did not change the fact that he was evil incarnate bent on exterminating entire cultures and categories of humans in addition to anyone who dared argue with him. For that reason his destruction was imperatiove to the future of the free world.

You could see a striking similarity from the Taliban during the Islamabad press conference early this morning. Funny, they did not dare call for the execution of Pakistanis as a "an obligation of all Muslims" this time around, when they were in country. That shows the true nature of these types. They are indeed cowards and hypocrites. If they are not stamped out now and harshly then the consequences for many more innocents the world over will be far worse than what we witnessed September 11. History has taught us that time and time again.

History shows that tit for tat (Northern Ireland, Palestine and Israel) reactions do not solve the problem.

After searching on the subject "tit for tat" (and sorting through the sites that were not porn ng) I found a link to a story I heard a long time ago. It's about behavioural scientists playing computer games mimicking evolution where you can win, lose, co-operate, or betray other players. Scores are awarded on how well you do.

There were lots of different programs developed, some of the quite complicated to achieve the highest score.

A very simple program called "tit for tat" won over everything else according to the story I heard.

Here is a link.

biology.ucsc.edu

So, I think that is why governments use the "tit for tat" approach. With determination...it works where all else fails.

The taliban has now been backed into a corner that they can not get out of. They have neither the resources nor the ability to comply with the US request.

Could you enlarge on "nor the ability to comply with the US request"?. This is not clear to me.

I agree with that--a commentator on Channel 7 (Peter Jennings interviewed him) said--WWI began with an ultimatum that could not be met, and last night an ultimatum was issued that could not be met.

On the other hand--I agree w/ some other comments here that sometimes fierce huge bluster, a la Reagan/star wars, can back the enemy down. The fact is, what's done is done. I feel Bush' policy toward Israel was too hard line and misguided & was the trigger for the current situation. But its done, and now we have little choice. To be wishy washy in any way would destroy us.
