I can imagine such an experience coloring your perspective about union activity in general. And there's alot about the way unions operate that is ideological, incompetent, utterly self-serving and not benevolent by a long-shot. I have had some personal contact with several unions this year alone as they have tried to organize a group of professionals of which I am a member and I experienced these things first-hand. Unfortunately, whatever criticisms you have about unions can also be applied to management, but they are no more universal criticisms than your view of unions is universal truth. Often the original reasons employees organize are quite valid. The trick is to maintain that relevance and not simply become self-serving bureaucracies willing to use scare tactics, inflamatory rhetoric and other heavy-handed methods to survive, even though management does the very same thing.
