Every day since, he has worked to deliver on the agenda he outlined as a candidate -- to make Pennsylvania a leader among states and a competitor among nations. More than anything else, Governor Ridge has worked to create good, family-sustaining jobs for Pennsylvanians. The results have been striking. In his first three years, nearly 250,000 new jobs have been created in Pennsylvania. Born Aug. 26, 1945 in Pittsburgh's Steel Valley and raised in a working-class family in Erie, Governor Ridge has lived a true "Pennsylvania experience." The Ridge family lived in veterans public housing in Erie before moving to the house where his mother, Laura, still resides today. From an early age, he learned the importance of family, education and work. Governor Ridge attended Cathedral Preparatory School in Erie. He earned a scholarship to Harvard, graduating with honors and a degree in government studies in 1967. After his first year at Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, Governor Ridge was drafted into the United States Army. He served as an infantry staff sergeant in Vietnam between 1969 and 1970, where his bravery was recognized with the Bronze Star for Valor, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and the Combat Infantry Badge. Upon his return from Vietnam, he completed his law studies and received his degree in 1972. Governor Ridge began his public service as an Assistant District Attorney in Erie County before his election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982. He was the first enlisted man who saw combat in Vietnam to be elected to the U.S. House. As a Republican representing a largely Democratic district, Governor Ridge spent more than a decade fighting for all the people of his district and building a strong legislative record as a courageous, independent and compassionate legislator. Governor Ridge has also been Chairman of the Council of Great Lakes Governors since 1996. Governor Ridge and his wife, Michele, the former Executive Director of the Erie County Library system, have two children, Lesley, age 11, and Tom, age 10. The Ridges also have three dogs, Molly, Allie and Gus. * * *
