They wanted to kill people and scare people. In view of the Ramsi Yousef attach on the WTC in 1993, I nonconcur. The terrorists, IMO, clearly had in mind to strike at and, in the event, destroy the greatest symbol of American economic imperialism i.e. the WTC towers and parenthetically the heart of our war machine, the Pentagon. I remain less convinced that the casualties were their targets, and I believe that their intent was and is to change U.S. government and corporate policy regarding the Islamic dominated nations of the planet, and not as has been portrayed by our propagandists, the senseless killing of innocents. Scaring people may or may not be useful to achieving this goal, which is to make the U.S. and its culture disappear from the Islamic world. For the next little while, we will try to interpose ourselves into this world in a bigger way than ever. A battle royale of nerves and wills is about to descend upon us. The drain on our purse is likely to be dramatic, as we attempt to "drain the swamp*** " in one of the most arid bits of parched earth on the planet. Metaphorically, if we can't accomplish our goals in a very few months, we're gonna be up xchit-istan creek without a viable finance paddle. And the terrorists will revel in their further destruction of our equity markets. After all, these savvy terrorists seem to have mastered the art of the short sale and puttin' on the puts prior to paralyzing our profit centers, if the news reports are to be believed. Think about it. Most of us play the game of casino investing/speculating with one hand tied behind our backs. We don't know the future. Now if we knew we were about to destroy a refinery, for instance, wouldn't that make short selling all that much easier? Imagine the possibilities. JM2C, Ray ***If the military aren't any more capable of directing forces in an arid and mountainous desert rife (with abundant tunnelling works and every local a guaranteed enemy) than they are at creating the appropriate metaphor, then we really are in trouble. There isn't a swamp within several hundred miles of Afghanistan, far as I know. Jingoism will only get us so far.
