"What happens to a profitable system that anyone can replicate?"

Forget replication - any change in the market for any reason can make a profitable system unprofitable. With that in mind, one would desire a system tested over many years with few parameters - and the parameters should not be strongly coupled. That will increase the odds that the system will work for some time.

"Whats the difference between a pattern (or a few) and a system?"

I would view a pattern as a useful relationship or observation. I would say a system makes use of a pattern to give buy, sell, and stop triggers.

"Its all trading when you get down to it."
