No seasonal 'uptick' yet in DRAMs
The long-awaited seasonal uptick in DRAM demand appears to be turning into a bust in 2001, according to Tatsuya Iida, senior vice president of marketing for Elpida Memory USA Inc. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based operation is the U.S. subsidiary of Japan's Elpida Memory Inc., a joint DRAM venture between Hitachi Ltd. and NEC Corp.

Typically, the months of September and October are the leading indicators if--or when--the DRAM market will pick up steam for the holiday season, Iida said.

But so far, September has been a bust for DRAM demand--with little or no positive signs for October, he said. "The demand is very, very weak right now, but the prices are stable," he said. "The problem is that the prices have already hit the bottom."--M.L.
