there would have been hope for a change I think had this incident not coincided with the onset of the kind of economic tough love that will soon revert people to their former selves or worse.

Well, we'll never know what caused it (the change in attitude) now. Still a change epic enough to keep the Big Apple's legendary barristers at bay in the midst of perhaps the highest dollar volume catastrophe of all time is a bit more than we can hope for just yet.
