Craig, I think that Walzer errs with his first statement "First define the battlefield", it should rightfully be: "first define the strategic goals". Once the strategic goals are clear, then the tactical means to achieve these goals can be planned and that will include the definition of the battlefields. We should ask ourselves what goals can define "Victory" in that war, and I think that GW defined it as the eradication of international terrorism.

Something is lost in the priorities here. We must hit the targets with overwhelming force in a manner which first and foremost protects our military and, where possible, limit casualties to civilians.
