Unfortunately, Bush was forced to use the total Black and White approach since it was such a policy statement speech. The reality is that NOTHING is that SIMPLE. Without Egypt, our approach in the Middle East is not going to work. It's a HUGE country with a massive population and no oil to speak of. So we must help Mubaric fight his fight within the country. As for Pakistan, Ike is there, but my view is that Dust Bin Laden and others have a lot on influence and their only weapon is to rile up the fundies to craziness and distrupt the Pakistan government so they can't be effective in their alliance with us.

I know it sounds like an oxymoron but Egypt is a stabilising force in the ME. If it falls to the radicals, it's lights out for that region as things would escalate very quickly. And you are of course dead on, it is all about oil. Oil money funded the terrorists and burning jet fuel brought down the WTC.
