Triple witching today.

Gap down open on COMPX. Attempt to rally after initial gap down. Rally into resistance at 1450. Pull back there after.
COMPX drew a flat line esssentially after 11:30 EST. Built up energy of flat line indicates a possible strong move in either direction. Cahnce favour an up move based on oversold market condition. It is hard to find strong stock as the week suffered from earnings warnings from AMAT, LSI, EMC, ONIS, AVCI which effected storage, metor telecom, core telecom, and some semiconductor and equipment storages. Wireless rallied anticipation of increased sales in light od attack in New York. RFMD, RIMM, TQNT held up reasonable well. RSTN beat estimates, no guidance going forward. It did not hold up well as ONIS announced the morning after.

Telecom carriers and oil services stock held up reasonable well. Telecom probably being look at a safe have based of cash flow and hordes of cash that they are not spending on cap ex. Oil services stocks rallied, but natural gas stocks fell on falling gas prices and sufficient gas inventories. Contract manufacturers rallied in light of JBL earnings.
Indications are for impact less than normal through increase outsourcing.

Toward the end of the week good news was ignored. Some stock did react to good news. RMBS rose in a falling market on INTC licensing agreement. TQNT rose initial on guidance that was better than expect. It did not last long though. Tough week overall.

Dow stocks re-bounded on GE re-affirming guidance and low double digit growth.

Toil and Trouble
By:Adam Martin
After a very volatile afternoon, the indexes made some gains in the last hour of trading to close well off the lows of the session, but still deep in negative territory. A variety of factors contributed to the volatility, but the main issues seem to be the same as they have been all week, the emotion-driven market and fears about what the future holds for the economy and for the world. Gloom and doom from corporate America added fuel to the fire, and it all amounted to a completely one sided market as very heavy volume told a tale of people eager to get out of stocks. Traders took little comfort from remarks by President Bush in his address to the nation last night, and indeed, fears of a long, costly war may now be greater than ever. Analysts, although largely confident of a recovery, say that at this point, all bets are off, and there's no telling where the bottom might be.

Hi Harry

Upgrades to BLS, VZ, and SBC caught my eye. If these companies start spending again we might have a sustainable rally.

In the mean time, I am counting on another 1.5 - 3 weeks of selling. Then a big rally in October - one like in April - a short squeeze. On Thursday, 9/20, CNBC commented on the amount of short selling that occurred this last week. A bear trap is being set. Over the next 3 weeks, if media reports of significant US activities abroad then all bets are off for a squeeze. The bears will have a chance to bask in their wealth. The markets need a few weeks of peace and quiet for investor hope to trickle in springing the trap on the bears.
