Also, another web site refers to "AL-Zulm"--not to oppress someone--apparently as an arabic (or perhaps Kurdish) word. Thosw within a language would be sensitive to pronounciations which seemed intended to offend, even if no such intent were present. Having relied upon the efficacy of Occam's Razor for many years, I will consider that, at least in some cases, the "variant" pronounciation was used intentionally as a means of ridicule. The alternative is to consider that the opposition was always and only composed of the ignorant or the witless...
