Despite Jitters, Pope Will Go to Kazakhstan as Scheduled
Melinda Henneberger New York Times Service
Saturday, September 22, 2001

ROME Despite some nervousness at the Vatican, Pope John Paul II has insisted that he will leave Saturday on a trip to Kazakhstan, where officials are planning tight security measures during his four-day visit.

Kazakhstan, where Muslims are a slight majority, is struggling to keep out Islamic radicals like those who have been fighting sporadically in neighboring Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan for the last two years. Militants in those countries are believed to have been trained in Afghanistan, which has sheltered Osama bin Laden, who the United States suspects is behind the attacks in New York and Washington.

The entire region is on edge waiting for Washington to retaliate, though ethnic and religious tensions in Kazakhstan remain relatively low. The Vatican said it had no evidence of threats there against the pope. In the past, papal trips to Northern Ireland and Sarajevo, Bosnia, have been canceled because of security concerns.

I suspect the Pope's entourage is plotting a dirty scheme... After all, the Pope is in a permanent haze --they probably told him that he was travelling to Croatia... Surprise!

Derek, what kind of Med he is on! I have a good idea he what he smokes for breakfast, but I didn't know he takes other meds!

I am still thinking about what you said aobut civil liberty! I apprecaite what you say, but what is the solution! Maybe there are times we have to moblize! During the war time, if the Congress approves, then these liberties maybe cartailed in the interest of the public!
I know it is not a good good idea to give special ID cards to arbs living in the US, but better that than arresting sevreal millions and taking them to the concentratin camps as it was done with Japanse! It is a shame. I know Arab American are good citizens, life anyother, but what else can we do when US Moslem Community is one the bigget source of fund-raisng for the Osama and Moslem extremists! I don't know what to do, thanks God there is the President and the COngress. We should trust them.
