With all the WTC/terrorism discussion lately, the proliferation of computer viruses has taken a back seat. My firewall has logged and blocked an awful lot of "inbound communications on port 80" recently, and I forwarded my concern to the abuse department of my ISP. Their response might be a warning and inspiration to all to practice safe computing. If you don't have proper software protection, you might not even know about this until it's too late: " Everyone is seeing these huge amounts of http (port 80) scans. The source is one of our customers whose computer is infected with the Code Red virus <http://www.eeye.com/html/Research/Advisories/AL20010717.html> or one of the new variants of Code Red, Code Red 2 and Nimda. Each one of these viruses is worse than the last and takes yet another chunk out of the Internet. Since a HUGE number of people have these viruses, there is a huge amount of these scans going on. We are getting to them as fast as we can but at the moment everybody is completely swamped by these. We will probably be seeing these for quite some time to come." "I am probably preaching to the choir here but please make sure that any machines you have are free of these viruses and encourage others to do the same. Make sure your Anti-virus software is up to date and run on a regular basis. Also keep up to date on software patches for mail and web servers. " (bold added)
