I can understand the desire of Protestants to not live in a country where the Catholic church has so much input into the government - just as I can understand the desire of Catholics not to live in a country where the Anglican church has (had?)

From what I've seen it seems a lot more political and cultural like the Quebec / Canada affair, veiled (here we are again) as a religious issue.

CB -

...Northern Ireland was settled by Protestants hundreds of years ago, it's majority Protestant, and they have the right to vote for whatever form of government they choose....

Including a government that hangs all non-Protestants from the lampposts? A majority vote is good for choosing the national bird, but when it is used to deny the humanity of the minority or to try to repeal the laws of physics and economics, it is only saved from disaster if it is uncoordinated and randomly self canceling.

If Europe wants to make a serious impression about its intention to fight the terrorism, there's already a home-made menu of dishes as follows:

a) northern Ireland
b) Euskadi aka Basqueland
c) Kosovo & macedonia
d) Corsica

then, to follow up on causes:

e) Algier
....

The first thing I would do, if I were God: I would get the hell out of the argument AND let people involved know about it.

Northern Ireland is a lot like the West Bank but further down the road... Jewish settlers in the West Bank don't plan on assimilating with the Arabs either.
