First, we're not going to see too much of it to begin with as the US military finally learned its lesson: The enemy watches CNN. Don't know what your sources may be, but locally the media has been cut at the knees. Very few interviews with military types and certainly no information as to specific plans. But lots of Reserve units are being called up. For what it's worth, I think the buildup is substantial but only to give Bush options. I would not expect mass bombing or anything like that as it is clear that doing so would be a waste of ordnance. Perhaps some bombing in areas where OBL is suspected to be, then Special Forces types go in to battle Taliban forces or bring out terrorists. The US will not use indiscriminate bombing as it is unnecessary, ineffective, and a public relations nightmare. The operations will be small, lethal, and not televised. The C-130 gunship may be used as it's probably an ideal weapons platform for the terrain where the operations will take place. It has two General Electric 20mm cannons, firing rounds at the rate of 6000 per minute as well as two Bofors 40mm cannons firing 2000 rounds per minute. Also has a 105mm howitzer that can deliver 6 rounds per minute. A fleet of these airplanes delivering that kind of firepower in a concentrated area is a truly lethal thing. They are extremely accurate and sturdy. Can you imagine heavy 20mm rounds coming in at the rate of 100 per second? In addition, the sunshine bombs may be used. These are bombs that spread gasoline or other vapor over a particular area, then detonate it. Much, much more powerful than conventional explosives. I think they're available now, but don't know for a fact. Napalm, of course, will also likely be used for caves. I'm bringing all this up because I don't think anyone except the military and the Iraqi army has any idea of the lethality of the upcoming conflict. The Afghans are poorly armed and will be thoroughly surprised at the advances in weaponry since their war with the Russians. Perhaps the US will reveal selected videoclips to quench the public's thirst for revenge.
