There's models of traffic, copied from solid state physics and essentially, that explain this kind of traffic behaviour by the way of phase transitions - liquid to frozen - . Think of the four oh one (T0 minus x) as undercooled liquid. A butterfly in Missisauga will make it freeze in no time. One essential systgem parameter is the number of vehicles per mile of the road. Who the dodo (or doda) was does not make any difference.
