Information like that sets me at ease that we have people who know what they're doing. I agree with him... and he certainly knows more than I. People like him and Colin Powell set me at ease that this and other world actions we take will be done well worth noting in this context that another person I'd consider one of the country's top Afghan specialists--up there with Rubin--is a guy named Zalmay Khalilzad. He happens to be the person in charge of policy towards the Persian Gulf at the NSC now, under Rice. So they certainly have very serious knowledge of the situation at their fingertips. Unfortunately, he's a bit of a neocon loony (he's cowritten "bomb them back into the stone age" pieces with Paul Wolfowitz, the deputy secretary of defense who's the administration's chief hawk), so how it will affect things, who knows... tb@yawnyawn.com
