the bigger question is, what will the euro countries do with their now surplus gold reserves or perhaps it will not matter what they do with them.

Times have changed. Germany has no currency of its own, the Mark is just so much paper, and next year is the beginning of the exchange against the (motley?) Euro. Good times have passed.
