FWIW I saw an article a couple days ago linked on SI home page that selling was considered largely institutional because of the volume and anecdotal evidence. I can't find it right now, but it was maybe Friday that I read it.

Don: I think the answer is that both were selling. But who has the power to move the markets? I would say the institutions have that power.

re: "Was it the individual investor puking or was it the money managers who were doing the real selling? "

Don, I heard a report on the radio from Trimtabs that looked at fund redemptions and said $9+B were redeemed, but that "that does not even fall in the top 10 of redemptions." He said it was clearly institutional and professionals doing the selling in panic mode. He said that the pros are far more inclined to react emotionally than the retail investor.

I have no opinion.. just passing that along. Heard it on NPR.
