Saudi Arabia a reluctant ally

The ruling class tolerates US policy with great reservation. If it wasn't for oil, US foreign policy would be very different. Here is a country, supposedly enlightened, but harbouring the likes of Idi Amin. Why does the US or that eager commission in Brussels prosecuting war crimes and crimes against humanity not denounce Saudi Arabia? Maybe, to be consistent, the US should place sanctions against her? The country is fertile recruiting grounds for terrorists.

Problem is the so called "moderate" Arab states such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and Algeria have all been mentioned recently, as some of their citizens are under arrest, in Europe, America or Asia, accused of being involved in terrorist cells tied to Bin Laden. How about Syria, Pakistan, Lybia, Iran; all known to have sponsored terrorist groups in the past.

It is a huge problem and involves the entire region, not just Afghanistan. The get tough policy must extend equally to all to have a chance to work, and therein lies the danger. It will be interesting to see how cooperative the M.E. "coalition" will ultimately be.

None of the governments are elected or democratic, and if the West cannot get full co-operation, "infinite Justice" will be very finite indeed.

Witness the backlash in Pakistan and Indonesia. A lot of governments are trying to walk a fine line. The "with us or against us" rhetoric does not wash in the real world. Way to many variables.
The cheque book has come out for both of these countries. I wonder how many more will be looking for like favours soon.
