And they were quite familiar with the gospel of Jesus Christ, but they were also just as familiar with the lessons of history, which is being repeated now ,over in the Middle East. Our society bends over backwards to be accommodating to the religious sensibilities , (we even allow Jerry Falwells to run around loose and preach without locking them up.) ;-) Yet there is something far more majestic in the promise and experience of freedom and democracy , that our founder's saw very clearly ... They were obeying a higher law , one of not being foolish and remain blind to what history had shown them , and the dream of abundance and rennaisance...and freedom from tyranny of thought and threat of persecution. This has made us great , and allowed for the revitalization many times of waves of immigrants , who came with their dreams traditions and beliefs ...and "truths". Because of that openess the ranks of some of our most learned scientist, engineers ,researchers , teachers, artists , thinkers have swelled and we have become revitalized with each successive wave of new immigration of the Japonese ,Korean , Chinese , Indian/Hindu , and the Southeast Asian... (and the Jew and Middle East & African) If there is One God , it is one God over all , not the select and few ...but what has made America great is her freedoms and tolerance always ...and respect for the inherent human values that were brought to her shores from many quarters of the world ...
