Correlating oil (consumption, growth of ~, price of ~) to some other aggregate (population, level of development) just shows how difficult the problem and its solution may be. OTH there's 1.4 kW of sun power per every m2 of earth available all over the place - there's got to be another way. It will be the only one down the road sooner or later.

People may take Germany for crazy, phasing out baseload supply to the order of a couple of 10.000 MW of nuclear stations in next 20 to 30 years but the [Environment Minister] 'Trittin told journalists in Berlin that the wind power plan could see between 75 and 80 terrawatt hours of electricity annually from offshore wind parks by 2030. This is equivalent to nearly 60 percent of the nuclear electricity produced last year in Germany.'

Its workable and its quite possible, US will be able (will have...) to just go and buy the technology in Europe - if Porsches and beamers are feasible, why not Plambecks and Windkontors (g).

Once the alternative energy supply is assured, the transport alternatives should not be that far away anymore.
