A lot of Navy and Air Force pilots left the service during the Clinton administration. Almost all of them now fly commercial airplanes. (I personally know one who now a pilot for United.) The advice about numbers of people and using pillows and blankets is too real not to be true. It is the advice and attitude of a combat pilot. It is also presents the best chance of survival in case some terrorist attempts a repeat performance. So I wouldn't be too cynical about the event.
