For an alternative viewpoint, you might consider this article from the ever interesting but sometimes prolix Atlantic Monthly. As near as I can tell, American oil is relatively expensive to produce, but if there's money to be made on it, it gets pumped. Also, as near as I can tell, the current situation is going to be used as just another reason to pump as much as possible as quickly as possible, especially wrt ANWR. Conservation seemed to be a dirty word with W from the start, though I guess he's come around a little.
