In my view law is applied morality. Religion is about morality and most of the basic laws that have existed in our society are based on religious beliefs. There is a long tradition in this country of the involvement of religion. The following come to mind: 1. The clear assertion in the declaration of independence that our rights come from god. 2. The involvement of the churches in the abolition movement and the fight against slavery. It is not a mere coincidence that the Battle Hymn of the Republic was the Union marching song. If ever there was a religious battle song it was there. 3. The involvement of many churches in the anti-war protests during the Viet Nam war. You may recall that a priest was elected to congress during this time. By the way the liberals had no problem with religious involvement in politics as long as it was on their side. On the other hand the conservatives complained to the high heavens using the same type of arguments as your post. 4. The involvement of the religious right in the anti abortion movement. The fact is religion has been a part of the fabric of this country for a long time and it has mostly been a force for good (although admittedly not always) and I for one welcome the participation of religious leaders in our national discussion WHETHER OR NOT I DISAGREE WITH THEM.
