Incredibly inefficient mess, that. I went to meet my mother who took my nephew down the coast with her. There were repeated breakdowns and they came in 8 hours late. This is not really unusual. Amtrak should pull it's weight. If we don't subsidize the Disney monorail with federal dollars, we shouldn't do it for Amtrak. It poses as an alternative form of transportation, but seriously, who would use something that unpredictable if they really had to get anywhere. We have a local express train that actually works: the Altamont Commuter Express. I had a friend who took it for a couple of years and loved it. It wasn't as fast as driving, but he got to read and chat with people on the train.
