Ted, I'll start at the end and work backward.

So what was Khatami doing, meeting with terrorists....I don't have a clue.

It looks to me like president Khatami has little real power. He was doing what he thought had to do to retain what little he has. That's something that is all too common, IMO, in the middle east.

The Clintons, at the time were, IMO, trying to get some kind of peace declared in the middle east. The process failed, but they tried.

there was the implication that somehow H. Clinton's behavior led to the attack on the WTC, or that the terrorists were encouraged to attack the WTC because she gave a wrong impression of who Americans are and what our response would be.

Yes, I can see how you got that impression, but it's not directly the one I intended. Since last September the Palestinians have moved very much away from the near peace of last October. So has Israel. Both sides seem bent on behavior which destroy their own credibility. If the peace had taken the symbolism would have been strong and successful. But it didn't take.

I'll try to be nicer in the future.
