Excellent CNN report today on the Taliban's rule of Afghanistan. Anyone remember when that old pacifist George McGovern called for a coalition of nations to step in and save Cambodia from the Khmer Rouge? Millions murdered in response to the need by Pol Pot to force a culture into compliance with a political philosophy. Any parallels with our current unelected ruling party in Afghanistan? Does anyone really know the death counts in that poor country from the never-ending civil war and secular crackdown?

I generally applaud Bush's handling of the entire 9-11 crisis. And, I agree with those who propose that we will see very little of the immediate impact of the international coalition now forming. It will show itself in the international banking world, where tolerance for money laundering and easy depositing of terrorist funds will stop. The U.S. and the rest of europe can exert extreme pressure on Switzerland and the off-shore havens. Bahrain has already indicated its unwillingness to harbor such funds. When the U.S. and Europe (even the French!) eliminate aid, trade, and indirect support for any nation involved in harboring terrorism, the impact will be enormous. Conversely, we have dropped sanctions on Pakistan and India.....indicating the type of immediate value which can be provided to those nations which support this worthy effort. The dipolomatic and economic screws are begining to tighten everywhere.

Also, Afghanistan is hardly a settled nation. If we hand billions of dollars and the most modern weapons to the anti-taliban forces, provide them with assistance in hunt and kill techniques, and advise the friendly taliban that is what we will be doing if they don't play ball....won't this have impact? Muslim against Muslim, after all. Their cry for a holy war against other native Muslims may not have quite the resonance of the anti-American diatribes.

But most of all, the squeeze. Squeeze every nation, every cult, every cell, every bank or financial front which may be doing business or supporting the terrorist culture. No one likes to be squeezed. And, if they really believe the sqeeze will not go away until they comply, and they can't just turn to another nation (sorry, France..you have blown it in the past) to get relief, the impact could be enormous, and quite silent to most of us.
