Zeev...Liberia became a very deadly civil was with three factions involved. Besides killing each other they concentrated their killing efforts on all foreigners. Everything I heard about it verified that it was very young soldiers (teen-agers ) using machine guns to kill who ever they encountered. As each fraction of that civil war was moved through different areas of the country they felt that it was necessary to kill the local population for being part of the opposition.

An informed person about African Civil Wars might be Mr. Levine who taught in Zimbawe.Just as the US did shape the Japan of today, Britain, France and Belgium gave Africa the shape it has now. Why the Congo became one country under King Leopold is another amazing history story. The Congo should be five separate countries based on local language ethnic divisions.

What I find amazing is that the US has the wealth, the technology, the military authority, the influence and the best strategic thinkers in the world and yet we muddle through from one international crises to the next one.
