That governments controlled by religious ideologies are responsible for at least some of the genocidal tendencies of humanity? Not a small number at that. No, that isn't the only reason (an unjustified moral superiority can also be a good way for atheists to start killing people). The "proof" I offer is that official church doctrine about the nature of the universe and man's role within the universe has fundamentally been wrong. The difference is that scientific people aren't going to hang you up (in this country) unless we include pseudoscientific fascist offerings as substitutes for real safety. I hope you don't want to blur the lines between our social identity by raising your own personal beliefs into supremacy or as justification for large-scale social policy. In a multicultural environment, it simply is ill-advised nominally and at best, unnecessary.
