DH, I don't think that the earnings scene is as bad as some would like us to believe.

As of the end of the second quarter, the TTM net income was negative for 84 of the SnP 500. The problem is that there were unprecedented losses in a few companies. I figure that the worst 10 knocked 17% off the earnings of the entire SnP. For example, the TTM for NT was a negative $24B, JDSU a negative $11.1B, LU a negative $7.8B, and GLW a negative $4.4B.

As with any average, the SnP simply represents the best of the worst and the worst of the best. There are some attractive valuations. That said, one should only buy stocks in this Market under close adult supervision.
